Depression Counselling

Depression Counselling

  • Psychology appointments
  • Initial & Subsequent sessions
  • Private, Medicare (where eligible), NDIS, WorkCover & ADF pathways

Depression can affect mood, motivation, thinking, energy levels, and how a person experiences everyday life. It may feel like persistent sadness, emotional numbness, exhaustion, or a loss of interest in things that once felt meaningful. At HMCE, depression counselling is provided within our Psychology services through structured appointments that support understanding, coping, and gradual recovery.

This page is written to align with the appointment types shown in our booking system (for example, Initial Appointment and Subsequent Appointment, plus relevant funding pathways where applicable). Depression counselling is not presented as a separate billable service, but as a common clinical focus addressed within standard psychology care.

How Depression Can Present

Depression does not look the same for everyone. Some people feel persistently low, while others experience a sense of emptiness or emotional flatness. Psychology support may be helpful when these experiences begin to interfere with daily functioning.

  • Ongoing low mood, sadness, or tearfulness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
  • Fatigue, low energy, or feeling slowed down
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, or worthlessness
  • Withdrawal from social, work, or family activities
Important: Depression is not a sign of weakness. Support focuses on understanding what maintains low mood and helping you rebuild energy, motivation, and a sense of meaning over time.

What Happens in an Initial Depression Counselling Appointment

The Initial Appointment focuses on understanding how depression is affecting your life, including mood patterns, stressors, supports, and daily routines. The psychologist will work with you to identify priorities and develop a clear plan for ongoing support that feels manageable and realistic.

What Happens in Subsequent Appointments

Subsequent Appointments focus on building coping strategies, improving daily functioning, addressing unhelpful thought patterns, and gradually increasing engagement in meaningful activities. Progress is reviewed regularly, and goals are adjusted to suit your pace and circumstances.

How Depression Counselling Is Tailored

Depression counselling is tailored to the individual. Some people focus on stabilising mood and energy, while others work on self-esteem, motivation, or long-standing patterns linked to stress or life experiences. Sessions are adapted to your needs, values, and current capacity.

Funding Pathways and Booking Options

HMCE’s booking categories list appointment types and funding pathways. Depression counselling is accessed through those same Psychology options. To avoid confusion: choose the appointment type that matches your funding pathway and whether it’s your first or a subsequent session.

  • NDIS Psychology — choose NDIS Psychology Session – Initial or Subsequent.
  • WorkCover — choose the WorkCover appointment type as listed.
  • ADF — choose ADF Initial or ADF – Subsequent.

If you’re unsure which option applies, please contact HMCE before booking. We can help you select the appointment type that best matches your pathway.
