Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based psychological approach that focuses on emotions, attachment, and patterns of connection in relationships. At HMCE, EFT-informed therapy may be used within Psychology appointments to support individuals and couples who experience relationship distress, emotional disconnection, or repeated cycles of conflict.
EFT is grounded in attachment theory and helps people understand how emotional needs, fears, and protective responses shape the way they relate to others. Rather than focusing solely on surface-level communication skills, EFT works to strengthen emotional safety and responsiveness within relationships.
What Is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
EFT is based on the idea that humans are wired for connection and emotional bonding. When emotional needs for safety, closeness, or reassurance are unmet, people often develop patterns of protest, withdrawal, or conflict. These patterns can feel automatic and difficult to change without support.
EFT helps individuals and couples identify these cycles, understand the emotions driving them, and create new ways of responding that promote security and connection. The goal is not to assign blame, but to strengthen emotional understanding and responsiveness.
How EFT Works
EFT is structured and collaborative. Sessions focus on understanding emotional experiences and interaction patterns, rather than debating who is “right” or “wrong.” EFT-informed work aims to slow down interactions so emotions can be recognised and expressed safely.
- Identifying recurring cycles of conflict or emotional distance
- Understanding emotions beneath reactions such as anger or withdrawal
- Strengthening emotional awareness and expression
- Building safer emotional connection and responsiveness
- Developing new interaction patterns that support trust and closeness
What EFT Can Help With
EFT-informed therapy may support a range of relationship and emotional concerns addressed within Psychology services. It is commonly associated with couples work, but its principles can also be helpful in individual therapy contexts where attachment patterns affect wellbeing.
- Relationship conflict and repeated arguments
- Emotional disconnection or feeling misunderstood
- Trust difficulties and attachment-related distress
- Communication breakdowns
- Adjustment to relationship transitions or stress
- Emotional regulation within close relationships
What Happens in an Initial EFT Appointment
In an Initial Appointment, the psychologist will explore the concerns bringing you or your relationship to therapy. This includes understanding interaction patterns, emotional triggers, and what each person hopes to change or improve.
EFT-informed sessions aim to create a safe and respectful space where emotions can be explored without judgement. The focus is on understanding patterns rather than placing blame.
What Happens in Subsequent Appointments
Subsequent Appointments focus on deepening emotional awareness, practising new ways of responding, and strengthening connection over time. Sessions may involve exploring vulnerable emotions, repairing emotional injuries, and reinforcing positive interaction patterns.
Progress in EFT often includes improved emotional closeness, clearer communication, and greater confidence navigating conflict without escalation.
How EFT Is Tailored
EFT-informed therapy is tailored to each individual or relationship. The pace, focus areas, and goals depend on the nature of the concerns, emotional readiness, and personal circumstances.
EFT may also be integrated with other therapeutic approaches—such as CBT, ACT, or skills-based support—depending on what best supports emotional safety and progress.
