Trauma & PTSD Support

Trauma & PTSD Support

  • Psychology appointments
  • Initial & Subsequent sessions
  • Private, Medicare (where eligible), NDIS, WorkCover & ADF pathways

Trauma can affect how people feel, think, and respond to the world long after an event has passed. It may follow a single incident or repeated experiences and can impact safety, trust, emotions, relationships, and daily functioning. At HMCE, trauma and PTSD support is provided within our Psychology services through structured appointments that prioritise safety, stability, and recovery at a pace that feels manageable.

This page is written to align with the appointment types shown in our booking system (for example, Initial Appointment and Subsequent Appointment, plus relevant funding pathways where applicable). Trauma and PTSD support is not presented as a separate billable service, but as a clinical focus addressed within standard psychology care.

How Trauma and PTSD Can Present

Trauma responses vary widely. Some people experience distress soon after an event, while others notice symptoms months or years later. Psychology support can be helpful when trauma-related symptoms persist or interfere with everyday life.

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or distressing dreams
  • Heightened alertness, startle response, or feeling constantly on edge
  • Avoidance of reminders, places, or conversations linked to the trauma
  • Emotional numbness, detachment, or difficulty feeling safe
  • Strong emotional reactions such as fear, anger, guilt, or shame
  • Sleep difficulties, concentration problems, or physical tension
  • Changes in beliefs about self, others, or the world
Important: Trauma responses are normal reactions to abnormal experiences. Support focuses on restoring a sense of safety, choice, and control rather than forcing disclosure or revisiting details before you are ready.

What Happens in an Initial Trauma & PTSD Appointment

The Initial Appointment focuses on understanding your current symptoms, triggers, coping strategies, and supports. The psychologist will prioritise safety and stabilisation, discuss goals, and explain how trauma-informed care works so you know what to expect.

What Happens in Subsequent Appointments

Subsequent Appointments focus on building regulation skills, reducing distress, strengthening coping strategies, and—when appropriate—processing trauma in a structured, supported way. Progress is guided by your readiness, preferences, and wellbeing.

How Trauma & PTSD Support Is Tailored

Trauma support is highly individual. Sessions are adapted to the type of trauma, current stability, personal goals, and cultural context. Some people focus on managing symptoms and daily functioning, while others work toward deeper processing over time. The approach remains collaborative and paced to avoid overwhelm.

HMCE’s booking categories list appointment types and funding pathways. Trauma and PTSD support is accessed through those same Psychology options. To avoid confusion: choose the appointment type that matches your funding pathway and whether it’s your first or a subsequent session.
