Grief & Loss Support

Grief & Loss Support

  • Psychology appointments
  • Initial & Subsequent sessions
  • Private, Medicare (where eligible), NDIS, WorkCover & ADF pathways

Grief is a natural response to loss, but it can feel overwhelming, confusing, and isolating. Loss may involve the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, changes in health, loss of identity, or significant life transitions. At HMCE, grief and loss support is provided within our Psychology services through structured appointments that offer space, understanding, and compassionate support during difficult times.

This page is written to align with the appointment types shown in our booking system (for example, Initial Appointment and Subsequent Appointment, plus relevant funding pathways where applicable). Grief and loss support is not presented as a separate billable service, but as a common clinical focus addressed within standard psychology care.

How Grief and Loss Can Present

Grief does not follow a straight path or timeline, and no two people experience it in the same way. Some people feel intense emotions, while others experience numbness or disconnection. Psychology support can help when grief begins to feel unmanageable or interferes with daily life.

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or tearfulness
  • Shock, numbness, or emotional disconnection
  • Guilt, anger, regret, or unresolved feelings
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
  • Sleep disturbances or changes in appetite
  • Withdrawal from relationships or activities
  • Difficulty adjusting to life after a significant loss
Important: There is no “right way” to grieve. Support focuses on helping you process loss at your own pace while finding ways to move forward without forgetting what or who has been lost.

What Happens in an Initial Grief & Loss Appointment

The Initial Appointment focuses on understanding the nature of the loss, how it has affected you emotionally and practically, and what support feels most helpful right now. The psychologist will work with you to identify immediate needs and develop a plan for ongoing support.

What Happens in Subsequent Appointments

Subsequent Appointments provide ongoing space to process grief, explore emotions, and develop coping strategies for navigating life changes. Sessions may focus on meaning-making, adjustment, emotional regulation, and rebuilding routine and connection over time.

How Grief & Loss Support Is Tailored

Grief support is highly individual. Some people need space to talk openly about their loss, while others focus on managing day-to-day functioning or navigating anniversaries and triggers. Sessions are adapted to your personal experience, values, cultural background, and current capacity.

Funding Pathways and Booking Options

HMCE’s booking categories list appointment types and funding pathways. Grief and loss support is accessed through those same Psychology options. To avoid confusion: choose the appointment type that matches your funding pathway and whether it’s your first or a subsequent session.

  • Private (Full Fee) — choose the relevant Initial or Subsequent Psychology appointment.
  • Medicare Bulk Billed (where eligible) — choose the listed Medicare bulk billed option.
  • NDIS Psychology — choose NDIS Psychology Session – Initial or Subsequent.
  • WorkCover — choose the WorkCover appointment type as listed.
  • ADF — choose ADF Initial or ADF – Subsequent.

If you’re unsure which option applies, please contact HMCE before booking. We can help you select the appointment type that best matches your pathway.
